Description
Product Introduction
The Bently Nevada 3500/15 is the primary power conversion module for the 3500 Machinery Protection System. Installed in the leftmost slot of a standard 19-inch 3500 rack chassis, it conditions raw plant utility power into stable internal backplane voltages to power system monitors, relay cards, keyphasor modules, and transient data interfaces.
The 3500/15 system accepts either single or dual redundant power supplies. When two 3500/15 modules are installed in a single rack, they operate in a load-sharing mode where either supply can carry the full rack load independently. This ensures that a loss of primary utility power or a supply failure will not disrupt machinery vibration protection or cause false trips.

Application Scenarios & The “Trench” Experience
Picture this: A main grid lightning strike triggers a power dip across a petrochemical site during a storm. The primary 120 VAC feed to an ethylene compressor protection rack momentarily drops to zero. Because the 3500 rack was configured with dual redundant 3500/15 supplies—one tied to 120 VAC utility and the second tied to a station 125 VDC battery bank—the rack seamlessly draws power from the DC supply without losing a single millisecond of vibration sampling or dropping any trip contacts.
- Critical Machinery Protection Racks – Main Gas & Steam Turbines – Supplies redundant power so vibration protection stays active even during single-source power outages.
- Refinery Control Rooms – Combined AC/DC Feeds – Operates with one High Voltage AC supply alongside a High/Low Voltage DC supply for true power source diversification.
- Offshore Platforms – 24 VDC Battery Systems – Accepts low-voltage DC power options for skids relying purely on direct battery backup banks.

Transparency SOP: Quality Assurance & Testing
We test every power supply module on dedicated 3500 test chassis prior to shipment:
- Visual & Hardware Audit: Inspect faceplate locking screws, rear connector pins, internal heat-sink mounts, and safety isolation labels.
- Power-On & Backplane Rail Sweep: Install unit into a test rack with full load cards; apply lower and upper limit input voltages to confirm internal rail regulation (+5 VDC, +15 VDC, -15 VDC, -24 VDC).
- Redundancy & Load-Share Test: Pair with a second 3500/15 module; cut input power to the primary supply under load to verify seamless secondary transfer without rack reset.
- Thermal Stability Check: Run under 80%+ power load for extended burn-in to verify internal fan and heat dissipation performance.
- Final QC & Packaging: Enclose in anti-static ESD shielding bags and seal in custom-molded foam shipping boxes.
The Veteran’s Tech Trap Guide
- ⚠️ Matching Supply & Input PIM (Power Input Module): A 3500/15 system consists of two parts: the front-mounted Power Supply module and the rear-mounted Power Input Module (PIM). You MUST pair the correct front supply with its corresponding rear PIM (e.g., High Voltage AC/DC supply requires High Voltage PIM). Mismatching a low-voltage front card with a high-voltage rear PIM will cause component damage or failure to power up!
- ❗ Redundant Supply Voltage Mixing: You can mix different input voltages in a redundant setup. For example, Slot 1 can have a High Voltage AC supply while Slot 2 has a Low Voltage DC supply. This is an industry best practice for maximum reliability.
- ⚠️ Half-Height Module Orientation: The 3500/15 is a half-height module that fits into either the upper or lower position of the left rack slot. Make sure both top and bottom captive thumbscrews are firmly tightened to establish proper chassis safety grounds.
- ❗ Maximum Load Budgeting: A single 3500/15 supply provides enough power for a fully loaded 3500 rack under standard conditions. However, when using many high-draw modules (like multiple 3500/32 relay cards or 3500/22M cards), ensure your line voltage does not drop below lower limits (e.g., < 85 VAC) to prevent thermal overload.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is the difference between a High Voltage and Low Voltage 3500/15 supply?
A: High Voltage modules accept 85–264 VAC or 88–300 VDC. Low Voltage modules accept 18–36 VDC (typically powered by 24 VDC plant supply rails).
Q: Can a 3500 rack operate with only one 3500/15 Power Supply?
A: Yes. A single 3500/15 power supply can run a fully populated 3500 rack. Adding a second supply provides hot-swappable dual redundancy.
Q: Can I hot-swap a failed 3500/15 module while the rack is live?
A: Yes, provided the rack has dual redundant supplies installed and one supply remains healthy and powered. You can safely remove and replace the faulty supply without shutting down rack monitoring.
Q: Do I need a blank cover if I am only using one 3500/15 supply?
A: Yes. If only one power supply is installed, a half-height slot cover plate must be installed over the empty power slot to maintain proper cooling airflow and safety shielding inside the chassis.
