Description

Product Introduction

The GE Multilin SR469-P5-HI-A20-T is an intelligent motor management relay designed for critical motor protection in industrial power systems. It combines motor protection, process monitoring, event recording, and communications into a single relay, making it suitable for motor control centers, switchgear lineups, and medium-voltage motor applications.

Unlike conventional overload relays, the SR469 continuously evaluates electrical and thermal operating conditions. The “T” suffix identifies the version equipped with an integrated 10Base-T Ethernet interface, allowing Ethernet-based communications in addition to the standard serial ports. One thing to watch out for is that the Ethernet version requires a compatible SR469 drawout case with the Ethernet cutout. Installing it in an older case can prevent proper connector access.

Application Scenarios & The “Trench” Experience

Here’s a problem that costs plants real money.

A 500 HP compressor motor trips every few days with no obvious electrical fault. The insulation resistance is acceptable. Bearings are healthy. Current remains balanced. Maintenance replaces contactors, checks cables, and even suspects the motor.

The actual issue turns out to be a failing protection relay producing intermittent measurements after years of continuous service.

Replacing the relay restores stable operation without replacing an otherwise healthy motor.

Typical Applications

  • Power Generation — Boiler feed pumps — Protects critical motors against overload, stall, and ground faults.
  • Oil & Gas — Compressor drives — Monitors motor health while providing Ethernet connectivity to SCADA.
  • Mining — Crusher and conveyor motors — Detects locked-rotor and excessive mechanical loading before equipment damage occurs.
  • Water & Wastewater — High-service pumping stations — Integrates motor diagnostics with plant automation systems.
  • Chemical Processing — Agitators and process compressors — Records motor events for maintenance analysis.

Field Replacement Example

A refinery experienced recurring nuisance trips on a large cooling-water pump. The maintenance team initially suspected fluctuating line voltage because no obvious motor defects could be found.

After replacing the SR469-P5-HI-A20-T and restoring the original configuration file, thermal calculations and current measurements returned to normal. The pump completed several months of continuous operation without another unexplained shutdown.

The Veteran’s Tech Trap Guide

⚠️ Back up the settings before removing the relay.

Trip curves, CT ratios, RTD assignments, and communication parameters are rarely factory defaults. Losing those settings can extend commissioning by several hours.

Verify the CT secondary rating.

This model is designed for 5 A CT secondaries (P5). Installing it where 1 A CTs are used will produce incorrect current calculations and unreliable protection.

⚠️ The “T” version needs the correct case.

The integrated Ethernet connector requires an case designed for Ethernet access. Older cases may physically fit but block the network connection.

Don’t blame the relay first.

In our field experience, loose CT wiring, grounded RTD shields, or deteriorated contactor auxiliary contacts often create symptoms that resemble relay failures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. What does the P5-HI-A20-T configuration mean?

  • P5 – 5 A phase CT secondary inputs
  • HI – 90–300 VDC or 70–265 VAC control power
  • A20 – Four 4–20 mA analog outputs
  • T – Integrated 10Base-T Ethernet interface

Q2. Does this relay support Ethernet communication?

Yes. The T version includes an integrated 10Base-T Ethernet port in addition to one RS-232 and two RS-485 serial ports. It supports Modbus communications over Ethernet as well as standard Modbus RTU.

Q3. Can I replace a P1 model with a P5 model?

No. The current transformer secondary rating is different. A P1 relay is intended for 1 A CTs, while the P5 version is designed for 5 A CTs. Substituting one for the other without changing the CT system will result in incorrect protection calculations.

Q4. Is the drawout case included?

Not necessarily. Many suppliers provide only the relay. Confirm whether the drawout case is included if you require a complete assembly.

Q5. Is this relay still manufactured?

No. The 469 family has been discontinued for many configurations. Most available units come from surplus inventories or professionally tested refurbished stock.

Q6. Why is surplus inventory less expensive than buying directly from the OEM?

Most surplus inventory originates from canceled projects, plant expansions, or strategic spare-part reductions. Lower pricing reflects the secondary supply chain rather than reduced hardware capability. Every unit should still undergo functional testing before shipment.

Q7. What warranty is typically available?

Professionally tested surplus or refurbished units are commonly supplied with a 12-month warranty covering functional defects during normal industrial operation. Damage caused by incorrect wiring, overvoltage, electrostatic discharge (ESD), or unauthorized modifications is typically excluded.

Engineering Note: Before commissioning an -P5-HI-A20-T, export the existing EnerVista settings file, document the CT ratio, motor full-load current, RTD configuration, communication parameters, and protection logic. The relay can usually be replaced in minutes; recreating a lost configuration from memory often takes much longer.
