Detailed Product Overview

The Oriental Motor AZD-KD belongs to the αSTEP AZ Series of closed-loop stepper drivers. It integrates a stored-data controller that allows positioning operations to be executed without continuous pulse-train input from a higher-level controller. Up to 256 independent positioning data sets can be stored in the driver and selected via I/O or network commands.

The driver is intended for AZ Series motors and actuators that incorporate the battery-less absolute encoder. Absolute position is retained without a battery, eliminating the need for external sensors or battery maintenance and shortening homing time. Power is supplied at 24 VDC or 48 VDC.

Communication is performed over RS-485 using the Modbus RTU protocol. Remote I/O expands control capability with 16 discrete inputs and 16 discrete outputs. Parameter setting, operation data editing, and status monitoring are carried out with the free MEXE02 software connected via USB.

The AZD-KD is supplied as a stand-alone driver unit. Compatible motors and connection cables are selected separately according to the required torque, frame size, and cable length. The driver supports positioning operation, push-motion operation, and linked sequential operation when configured appropriately.

Because the unit is a DC-input driver with built-in controller, system design must account for the selected power supply voltage, total current demand of the connected motor, and proper termination of the RS-485 network.

Engineering Selection Highlights

  • Select the AZD-KD when a stored-data (built-in controller) architecture is required rather than pure pulse-input control.
  • Confirm that the connected motor or actuator belongs to the AZ Series with battery-less absolute encoder.
  • Provide a regulated 24 VDC or 48 VDC supply sized for the motor current rating under the intended duty cycle.
  • Use MEXE02 software for initial parameter setup, positioning data entry, and diagnostics.
  • Plan RS-485 network topology and termination when multiple drivers share the same bus.
  • Verify remote I/O point allocation if discrete signals are used for start, stop, or status feedback.
  • Match cable type and length to the motor and electromagnetic-brake requirements of the specific AZ Series product.

FAQ

What is the Oriental Motor AZD-KD?
It is a closed-loop absolute driver with built-in controller (stored data type) for the αSTEP AZ Series, operating on 24/48 VDC.

What type of control does it provide?
It stores up to 256 positioning data points and executes motion via I/O or Modbus RTU commands without continuous pulse input.

Does it require a battery for absolute position?
No. It uses the battery-less absolute system of the AZ Series motors.

What communication protocol is supported?
Modbus RTU over RS-485. Remote I/O provides 16 input and 16 output points.

How is the driver configured?
With the free MEXE02 support software.

What power supply is required?
24 VDC or 48 VDC, selected according to the connected AZ Series motor.

Is the AZD-KD a complete motor-and-driver package?
No. It is the driver unit only. Compatible AZ Series motors and connection cables are ordered separately.
