Description
Product Introduction & Engineering Value
High-density control cabinets often run out of DIN rail space when separate cards are specified for basic machine run-signals and pilot solenoids. The GE VersaMax IC200MDD844 fixes this real estate bottleneck by integrating 16 discrete inputs and 16 discrete outputs into a single standard VersaMax slot. It handles real-time machine sensing while simultaneously driving 24 VDC relay coils, indicator lights, and small actuators.
Supporting flexible wiring topologies, the input group accepts both sink (positive) and source (negative) logic configurations, making it compatible with a wide variety of field switches and PNP/NPN photoelectric sensors. On the output side, each 0.5A transistor channel includes short-circuit protection and individual diagnostic status feedback to safeguard the backplane during field wiring shorts.

Field Application & The “Trench” Experience
While retrofitting a bottle capping machine, we ran out of available slot space on the local VersaMax expansion rack. The machine required 12 pushbuttons and optical sensors, plus 14 pneumatic valve solenoids. Instead of adding a second expansion rack and baseplate, we pulled out two single-function cards and installed a single IC200MDD844 on a 32-point box carrier (IC200CHS022). All 12 inputs and 14 outputs landed on the same carrier base, freeing up an entire slot for an analog card and finishing the job ahead of deadline.
Niche Application Scenarios:
- Automated Palletizer Skids: Handling conveyor optical sensors (inputs) and pneumatic cylinder pushers (outputs) from a single rack position.
- Packaging Machinery Control: Monitoring door interlocks and guard switches while driving 24 VDC stack light indicators and fault horns.
- Pumping System Panels: Interlocking motor starter auxiliary contacts (inputs) while pulsing 24 VDC pilot relays (outputs).

Transparency SOP: QA & Testing
- Connector & Pin Integrity Check: Inspecting edge connector gold contacts and keying alignment slots for any physical defects.
- Backplane Current Verification: Verifying 5 VDC logic current draw stays steady at the nominal 100 mA rating on our test rig.
- 16-Point Input Bus Test: Injecting 24 VDC logic signals across all 16 input channels (both sink and source configurations) to verify bit registration in Machine Edition software.
- 16-Point Output Load Testing: Driving a 0.5A resistive load bank on all 16 output channels simultaneously to check driver switching and thermal stability.
- Short-Circuit Protection Audit: Simulating a direct field short on an active output channel to confirm automatic electronic shutdown without damaging internal logic traces.
The Veteran’s Tech Trap Guide
- ⚠️ Check Output Group Current Limits! While each individual output channel handles up to 0.5A, the combined continuous current across an 8-point output group cannot exceed 4.0 Amps total. If you wire 16 high-draw hydraulic solenoids to one card, you risk tripping the internal thermal protection on the group power rail.
- PRO TIP: External 24 VDC Field Power Connection! The output transistor drivers require a dedicated external 24 VDC supply connected to the carrier terminals. If your inputs register in logic but your outputs fail to switch 24 VDC, verify that external power is landed on the carrier’s field supply terminals!
- ⚠️ Selecting Input Sink/Source: Remember that input logic (sink vs. source) is set by how you wire the common return terminal on the carrier. Ensure your field sensor outputs (PNP vs. NPN) match your common wire termination!
Dynamic FAQ
Q: Can I use the IC200MDD844 with a 32-point compact carrier like the IC200CHS022?
A: Yes. The IC200MDD844 features 32 total field I/O points (16 in / 16 out) and is designed to mate with 32-point carriers, including box-style (IC200CHS022) and spring-style carriers.
Q: Are the output channels current-sinking or current-sourcing?
A: The outputs are sourcing drivers (PNP type). When an output channel turns ON, it switches positive 24 VDC to your field load.
Q: What happens if an output channel experiences an overload or short circuit?
A: The module features built-in electronic short-circuit protection that safely shuts down the affected channel until the fault condition is cleared and power is cycled.
Q: Do you test these modules prior to shipment?
A: Yes. Every unit undergoes full 16-in/16-out load and logic testing on active VersaMax racks and is backed by a 1-Year replacement warranty.
