Description

Typical Applications

  • Power Generation — Boiler feed pumps — Protects large induction motors against overload and locked rotor conditions.
  • Oil & Gas — Compressor and pipeline pumps — Monitors current, temperature, and ground fault conditions.
  • Mining — Conveyor and crusher drives — Detects stalled motors before mechanical damage occurs.
  • Water & Wastewater — High-service pumps — Integrates motor diagnostics with SCADA through Modbus RTU.
  • Chemical Processing — Process agitators and compressors — Provides continuous motor health monitoring and event recording.

Field Replacement Example

A petrochemical plant experienced repeated trips on a 4160 V compressor motor. Motor testing, insulation resistance, and vibration analysis all indicated the machine was in good condition.

The maintenance team eventually discovered that a replacement relay had been installed without transferring the original protection settings. After restoring the CT ratio, RTD configuration, and overload curve to the new 469-P1-HI-A20-E, the compressor returned to normal operation without additional trips.

Transparency SOP: Quality Assurance & Testing

We don’t just ship boxes; we test them on actual GE Multilin motor protection systems whenever practical.

  • Inbound Inspection
    • Verify GE Multilin labels and complete ordering code.
    • Inspect SR469 case guides and drawout mechanism.
    • Examine terminal blocks, keypad, and LCD.
  • Live Rig Testing
    • Apply rated control power.
    • Verify LCD startup and self-diagnostics.
    • Test output relays and digital inputs.
    • Confirm Modbus communication.
  • Electrical Parameter Checks
    • Measure control power consumption.
    • Verify relay pickup and dropout values.
    • Test analog 4–20 mA outputs.
    • Confirm RTD input operation.
  • Firmware Verification
    • Record firmware revision.
    • Verify hardware revision.
    • Save configuration before shipment when available.
  • Final QC & Packaging
    • Functional verification.
    • Anti-static packaging.
    • Protective foam for the relay and drawout case.
    • Serial number traceability.

The Veteran’s Tech Trap Guide

⚠️ Never replace the relay before backing up the settings.

Protection curves, CT ratios, RTD assignments, alarm logic, and Modbus addresses are almost always customized for the motor.

The relay and case are different parts.

The 469-P1-HI-A20-E is the drawout relay. The SR469-CASE is the fixed housing. Don’t assume both are included with every purchase.

⚠️ Verify CT secondary rating.

This model is designed for 1 A CT secondaries (P1). Installing it on a system wired for 5 A CTs without correction will result in incorrect protection calculations.

Don’t ignore the RTD wiring.

One grounded RTD shield can generate unstable temperature readings and nuisance alarms. Follow the OEM recommendation to ground RTD cable shields only at the relay end.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. Is the SR469-CASE included with the relay?

Not always. Many suppliers sell only the 469-P1-HI-A20-E drawout relay. If you require both the relay and housing, verify that the SR469-CASE is included in the quotation.

Q2. What does P1-HI-A20-E mean?

  • P1 – 1 A phase CT secondary inputs
  • HI – High-range control power (90–300 VDC / 70–265 VAC)
  • A20 – Four 4–20 mA analog outputs
  • E – Enhanced front display with a larger LCD

Q3. Can the relay be hot-swapped?

Generally, no. Although the relay uses a drawout design, replacement should be performed with the associated motor control circuit safely isolated and following your plant’s lockout/tagout procedure.

Q4. Does it support communication with SCADA?

Yes. The relay supports Modbus RTU over RS-485, allowing integration with PLCs, DCS platforms, and SCADA systems for monitoring, alarms, and diagnostics.

Q5. Why is this relay still widely used?

Many industrial plants continue operating motors installed twenty or thirty years ago. Replacing a protection relay is usually far less expensive than redesigning an entire MCC lineup or replacing the motor itself.

Q6. Why are surplus units often less expensive than buying directly from the OEM?

Most surplus inventory comes from plant expansions, canceled projects, or strategic spare-part reductions. Lower pricing reflects the secondary market rather than reduced functionality. Every relay should still undergo inspection and functional testing before shipment.

Q7. What warranty is typically offered?

Professionally tested surplus or refurbished units commonly include a 12-month warranty covering functional defects under normal operating conditions. Damage caused by incorrect wiring, overvoltage, unauthorized modification, or electrostatic discharge (ESD) is generally excluded.

Engineering Note: Before commissioning a replacement 469-P1-HI-, export the existing settings file, document the CT ratio, motor full-load current, RTD assignments, protection curves, and communication parameters. Restoring those values is often the difference between a successful startup and several hours of unnecessary troubleshooting.
